RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Male and female volleyball teams representing the air forces of six nations took part in NATO’s 2020 Allied Air Command Inter-Nation Volleyball Championships here Feb. 17-21.
This was the first time the base had the opportunity to host this volleyball tournament, which featured athletes representing the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium and the Netherlands.
“It was such an awesome opportunity to be a part of a great team of volunteers and leadership members who were able to put on this event,” said Tech. Sgt. Michael Koeper, 100th Force Support Squadron fitness center NCO-in-charge. “Being able to interact with athletes and supporters from our allied countries was an experience I won’t soon forget.”
The tournament, sponsored by the Headquarters Allied Air Command Inter-Nation Sports Board, based out of Ramstein Air Base in Germany, has been running for more than four decades and involves countries from across Europe.
The women’s team representing United Air Forces in Europe and the men’s team representing the German air force took home first place at this year’s tournament.
According to Col. Clay Freeman, 352nd Special Operations Wing commander, the success of the tournament wouldn’t have been possible without the help of volunteers, liaisons and support from base leadership.
“I’m proud of how our own team here at Mildenhall was able to work so hard and exemplify excellence and provide a great atmosphere for a week of friendly competition,” Freeman said.
