Barrier Maintenance

Staff Sgt. Ryan McDaniel, 100th CES Barrier Maintenance, fits a hook, similar to that on a fighter aircraft, onto a cable to demonstrate how the aircraft catches on and gets brought to a stop. The ‘donuts’ on the cable keep it 2 inches off the ground. The cables are checked each day to ensure they are not cracked or broken, have no kinks and are in good working order. If a call comes in to the barrier maintenance personnel, they can be at the barrier shacks and have everything in place and cables set up in about seven minutes. Sergeant McDaniel they said their goal is a three minute response time from Building 705, on the south side of base, to any of the barrier shacks on base. While there have been no actual barrier engagements in the past year, there were two certification engagements – with two aircraft from RAF Lakenheath (one at each end of the runway) – in September.
