Pony Club: Make friends, learn life skills
A rider takes part in a cross-country event at Soham Pony Club grounds. During rallies, riders practice the fences in preparation for cross-county and one-day events. Many equine enthusiasts would agree that eventing asks the most from the horse. These athletes need to be elegant and graceful in the dressage, bold and fast in the cross-country and then precise and controlled in the delicate show jumping stage. (Courtesy photo by Gina Randall)

Pony Club: Make friends, learn life skills
Riders and their horses wait for a show jumping event to begin at Soham Pony Club grounds. In show-jumping, horses need to be careful not to knock the poles off, while still run at a fast pace so as not to incur time penalties. Many Pony Clubs encourage healthy competition among its members by having show jumping teams. (Courtesy photo by Gina Randall)

Pony Club: Make friends, learn life skills
A rider warms up her horse in preparation for a cross-country event at Soham Pony Club grounds. The time taken to warm-up varies depending on the horse. Horses prone to ‘fizz up’ such as over-enthusiastic thoroughbred types are often warmed up for longer so the horse is calmer for the event. Cob-types are steadier by nature and will need to save energy for the event, so most riders only warm-up this type of horse’s muscles, rather than try to take some energy away.
