The Independence Day holiday weekend is special for us Americans. Summer is in full swing, and it's time to enjoy a few days off with family and friends. Unfortunately, long holiday weekends can end badly if we do not pay attention to safety.

Please keep your safety and that of your family and friends in your crosscheck. Reinforce the "Wingman Philosophy," and keep an eye out for each other. Actively engage others and talk about travel plans, designated drivers and common sense. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, drive defensively, and maintain good situational awareness when in public venues.

Seven Air Force Airmen around the world have died in off-duty mishaps since the beginning of the 101 Critical Days of Summer. Three of those fatalities were from within USAFE. While every mishap is unique in its own way, each of these tragic incidents was preventable. At some point in the accident sequence, a better decision could have been made to save a life and to save a family the grief of losing a loved one.

Many of you plan special activities to enjoy this special weekend; I'm asking you to make responsible choices and good decisions. Being a good wingman, practicing sound risk management, wearing your seat belt and not drinking and driving are a great start to ensure we all return to work ready to continue the outstanding work we do!

Thank you for your commitment to our mission. Remember those Airmen who are deployed around the world in harm's way, and keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Let's ensure that every USAFE Airman, U.S. and host nation civilian and family member safely enjoys this holiday weekend as we celebrate freedom!
