RAF MILDENHALL, England – Imagine a crowd of people, with all eyes on you. It’s up to you to dictate the atmosphere with the music and keep the energy going for hours. For some, this scenario might be too much to handle. For Senior Airman Asia Moore, becoming a DJ created the opportunity to leave her comfort zone.

The100th Force Support Squadron fitness specialist discovered an interest in becoming a DJ during a deployment in 2015. Since then, she has been the disk jockey for base events, private parties and at local clubs.

“I like DJing because it makes me feel good to see others enjoying themselves to the vibe that I put out,” Moore said. “It’s a great social outlet for me – I meet a ton of people doing what I do.

“Surprisingly enough, I’m not a very outgoing person,” she explained. “I’m actually terrified of strangers and meeting new people. But music helps me break out of my comfort zone, ultimately face my fears.”

Overcoming and facing social anxiety has benefitted her life on and off-duty.

“The wonderful thing about being an Airman in the gym facilities and a DJ at the same time, is that a lot of people know me from my on and off-duty work environments. So they know that no matter what, when I’m around everyone will have a good time, but they will also be safe.”

Moore’s off-duty career is no secret to her leadership. In fact, they support and understand the importance of having a hobby outside of work.

“What Moore does brings joy to everyone and fits who she is as a person. She has the type of personality that can loosen the mood in a tight room and make everyone feel welcome,” said Staff Sgt. Marvis Stoney, 100th FSS fitness assessment cell NCO in charge. “She has a passion for being a DJ and it’s what she wants to do once she is done with the military.”

“I think it’s very important to have a hobby outside of work – it makes people more resilient,” Stoney explained. “Spending time doing what you love can take away from the stress that you are going through.”

It has become apparent that aspects from Moore’s military and DJ career coincide to her benefit. She explained that she wants to promote a safe and fun environment whenever she is hired for a gig.

“I strongly believe in the wingman concept and I’m always there to lend a hand and help keep others out of trouble,” Moore said.

Some may not know that DJ S’Moore is also Senior Airman Moore at the gym facilities on base.

“Asia is a very dedicated young lady who I’ve had a wonderful time mentoring and learning from as well,” Stoney said. “She has the type of personality that is very welcoming and easy to talk to. If you’re ever at the gym, stop by and have a conversation with her.”
