May 27 officially begins the 101 Critical Days of Summer for 2013, a campaign which runs through Sept. 2 and is geared toward educating Team Mildenhall members on the safest ways to enjoy their summer while stationed overseas.

One of the most important points the campaign highlights is road safety. The majority of deaths during the critical days of summer for the last three years have been caused by privately owned motor-vehicle related accidents. Driving according to posted speed limits and adjusting speed to the road and weather conditions can help to decrease the probability of losing control of a vehicle. Another factor in safe driving is sobriety. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol reduces reaction time and impairs judgment, increasing the chances of a car crash. Similarly, fatigue is another factor that leads to a higher probability for an accident.

While living in the U.K., there are many opportunities to travel in Europe. The campaign covers ways to keep from looking like an easy mark while traveling, thus lowering the chance of becoming the target or victim of a robbery or terrorist act. Suggested precautionary measures include carrying all money and documents, such as passports, in a secure place, learning the laws and customs of the countries being visited, and of course not dressing like a tourist.

Another key to safe travel is situational awareness. Knowing the layout of the local area and sticking to the main roads will greatly reduce the chances of a violent encounter. Being aware of the surroundings can help in the detection of potential pickpockets, who thrive on people not paying attention to who is around them. Knowing how to handle any situation is also essential while traveling. All escape routes should be noted, and there should be a clear way to access them.

Throughout the summer, safety and awareness will ensure the lowest risk levels and keep Team Mildenhall members fit to complete the mission.
