RAF Mildenhall under construction Published April 26, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Preston Webb 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs RAF MILDENHALL, England -- A red brick building stands alone, unused and abandoned. Vines and plants wind their way up the building's walls, and animals make their home inside. Broken front windows, unwillingly elongated by missing bricks, seem like sad lonely eyes on the face of the building that make the building seem as though it's missing the days when it was useful. To remain standing, a building needs regular repairs. At RAF Mildenhall, England, the 100th Civil Engineer Squadron repairs and constructs structures and facilities necessary for mission success. Several construction projects are currently underway on RAF Mildenhall and many more scheduled for construction, said Francis Dinh, 100th CES chief of program development. Rehabilitation of building 768, an aerial delivery facility for the 352nd Special Operations Group, is one such project, Dinh said. The project, costing $2.5 million, will involve demolishing portable buildings, services and partitions; removing the mezzanine floor and rolling shelves; repairing and painting the floors; erecting a new dividing fence; and stripping of offices. Several more current and upcoming construction projects for 2013 are as follows: · Heritage Park is currently closed to repair the softball pitches. · Perimeter road is currently closed near Taxiway Alpha, which is being extended. · Hang The Expense Road is scheduled to be closed for maintenance at the water filtration plant. · Lincoln Road is scheduled to be closed for the installation of an anti-vehicle barrier. · Repairs to the fuel hydrant system on the north side of the flightline. · A $1.2 million project to construct a larger parking lot for the laundry facility at building 128. Several buildings and locations on RAF Mildenhall support mission operations, many spanning decades. "Some of the buildings were constructed in the '30s," said Doug Rush, 100th CES chief of programs. "You have to sustain what you have." The 100th CES is a crucial element to ensuring RAF Mildenhall's facilities are maintained and ready for future mission success. With their help, the buildings around base will still be standing for many years to come.
