RAF Mildenhall installs new CAC locks in dorms

RAF MILDENHALL, England --  Airmen living in Dorms 212 and 224 recently turned in their room keys upon the installation of new Common Access Card locks.

The locks open when dorm residents slide their card into their room doors.

"The new locks are awesome," said Staff Sgt. Joshua Madison, Civil Engineer Squadron airmen dorm leader, from Surprise, Ariz. "They allow us to have more control over who has access to the dorms."

The laundry room and dayrooms in 224 also received new CAC locks.

"The locks are an added security measure as well as being more cost effective then keys," said Sandrine Burke, 100th CES airmen dorm leader, from London.

Each metal key costs about $35 to replace as opposed to the key cards which are much cheaper, said Burke.

The new locks also allow dorm managers to see who has accessed each room.

"For example, if the dayroom is vandalized, I can see who entered the room between times 'x' and 'y,'" said Madison.

The two dorms are the first at RAF Mildenhall to receive the new locks, currently in a testing phase. Upon completion of testing, the base will consideradding the locks to other dorms.
