HAWC gives Airmen ability to soar into healthy living Published Dec. 20, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Kelsey A.L. Waters 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs RAF MILDENHALL, England -- The Health and Wellness Center here has a multitude of ways to keep Airmen and their dependents healthy. The HAWC is part of the 48th Aerospace Medical Squadron and is located inside the Hardstand Fitness Center. Two of the services the HAWC offers are the relaxation room and the light therapy room. "The relaxation room has a large massage chair that can massage everything from your elbows to your ankles," said Staff Sgt. Dequalin Rogers, 48th AMDS nutrition specialist, from Dallas, Texas. The light therapy room provides Vitamin D to its occupants, which is especially important in the winter months when the sun is only up for a few hours and people may not be getting the amount of Vitamin D they should. "The light therapy room is a way to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder, which can cause depression in some people when they don't receive enough Vitamin D through sunlight," said Dr. Jennifer Herling, 48th AMDS health and fitness specialist, from Union City, Calif. One of the many classes offered by the HAWC is the "Be Well" class. "The Be Well class goes through healthy eating habits, dealing with stress and proper exercise," said Rogers. "The class is mandatory for anyone who fails their physical training, test but it's open to everyone." Another class offered by the HAWC is the pre-natal class which goes through proper exercise and eating habits for pregnant women. The class is open to spouses and is mandatory for pregnant active duty service members. For more information on these and other courses, contact the HAWC at 01638-547161.
