CBRN class ensures Airmen’s safety Published Dec. 10, 2012 By Senior Airman Ethan Morgan 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear training and is required for all military members in a "deployable" status. During the CBRN training, RAF Mildenhall Airmen from the 100th Civil Engineer Squadron Readiness and Emergency Management Flight ensure base personnel are equipped with basic skills in the event of a CBRN attack. "CBRN prepares Airmen and establishes a standard knowledge in how to use their gear to protect themselves against chemical or biological attacks," said Senior Airman Marco Misko, 100th CES EM apprentice. "CBRN also teaches Airmen how to proceed in the result of an attack or unexploded ordinance." The class teaches Airmen the basic concepts and procedures they should know to ensure that they, their work centers, assets and fellow Airmen are prepared and protected against the threat of CBRN materials, along with how to conduct searches and report the findings. "The most important factor this class has to offer is to ensure that all personnel going through have a full understanding of how to care for and don their protective equipment," said Staff Sgt. Bernard Cobb, 100th CES EM education and training NCO in charge. "In the event of a CBRN material release, personnel will need to quickly and efficiently don their protective equipment. Even the slightest mistake or exposure could result in serious injury or fatality." The emergency management flight has 10 qualified instructors who teach this training in four classes per month. "Without this course, the Air Force could potentially lose thousands of personnel and millions of dollars in assets due to poor preparation under the threat of CBRN material release," said Cobb. "Airmen could be put into a situation where they wouldn't have the training to ensure safety for themselves or their wingmen."
