USPS allows lithium battery shipments from, not to, U.S.

RAF MILDENHALL, England -- As of Nov. 15, 2012, the United States Postal Service lifted the restriction on the mailing of lithium batteries, allowing Team Mildenhall members to receive them through shipments from the United States.

Though the restriction has been lifted for shipments coming from the U.S., the USPS has yet to allow lithium batteries to be shipped to the U.S. from international locations.

"The USPS is accepting items containing lithium batteries that are destined for overseas locations," said Tech. Sgt. Melvin Adkins, 100th Communications Squadron postmaster. "Currently however, we are still not authorized to accept any items that contain lithium batteries to be mailed out of our Army Post Office."

The USPS has yet to release any information on when they will again allow lithium batteries to be shipped to the United States from overseas locations.

Earlier this year the USPS banned the mailing of lithium batteries to or from international destinations, including Army post offices, fleet post offices and diplomatic post offices.
