At least 800 volunteers are needed to assist with the 31st Annual Joan Mann Special Sports Day Oct. 13, 2012, at RAF Mildenhall.

Airmen, civilians and dependents 16 and older from RAF Mildenhall, RAF Lakenheath and RAF Feltwell can volunteer, said Tech. Sgt. Edwin Bispat, 100th Communications Squadron training manager and JMSSD volunteer point of contact.

Volunteers will welcome guests, escort athletes, assist with parking, set up and tear down equipment, coordinate games and serve food.

Bispat said JMSSD is loosely based on the Olympics and features a variety of sporting activities including an obstacle course, ring toss, a basketball shoot-out, bowling and a 50-yard wheelchair dash. Special-needs athletes from across England will participate in these events.

Joan Mann was a Ministry of Defence employee who worked in the public affairs office at RAF Mildenhall. Mann put together the special sports day as a way to not only offer special-needs people of all ages a day of fun, but also to draw the civilian and military communities closer together.

To volunteer, contact Bispat at DSN 238-2114 or commercial at 01638 542114 before Oct. 10. Alternatively, contact Tech. Sgt. Marlana Babel at DSN 238-7101 or commercial at 01638 547101.
