With fair weather on the horizon, National Bike Month couldn't come at a better time of the year for RAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath.

Keeping with the vision of the Air Force Fit-to-Fight program, Bike Month is an option that U.S. Air Forces in Europe is excited to encourage it's Airmen take part in. The month of May provides a chance to raise awareness among both riders and non-riders, in addition to promoting physical fitness and alternative means of transportation.

"The people in the area are more cycle friendly than around many other bases I've come from," said Master Sgt. Alec Maund, 100th Force Support Squadron Northside Fitness Center fitness director, and a seasoned cyclist. "However, I still encourage all base members to be cognizant of the current highway codes regarding cyclists."

Alternative options to hitting the road are offered through indoor cycling, or SPIN classes, at the Hardstand and Northside Fitness Centers. The classes give Airmen a more secure atmosphere to train or burn a few calories on a time crunch. Additionally, the fitness centers offer trained instructors who offer helpful guidance to all skill levels.

"The SPIN class offers a great way to raise your heart rate quickly and can be incorporated into you weekly workout," explained Tech. Sgt. Javier Romero, 100th FSS Northside Fitness Center SPIN instructor. "We've also just added two new instructors to our staff, allowing us to open up our schedule."

The schedule for SPIN classes, in addition to all programs offered, may be found at the fitness centers or on RAF Mildenhall's public webpage, under the fitness tab.

In addition to recreational use, cycling offers a chance for Team Mildenhall to further Col. Christopher Kulas', 100th Air Refueling Wing commander, initiative to reduce the base's carbon footprint.

Before taking to the road, it's important that all cyclists and non-cyclists are aware of the Highway Codes relevant to bicycling on the road. They may be found in the 2007 revised edition of the Highway Code, rules 59-82 or online here.
