Starting in January, the North Side and Hardstand Fitness Centers are offering two programs to help people either lose weight or better their cardiovascular, strength and flexibility.

The first is the Biggest Loser competition, which runs Jan. 5 to March 31, and the second is a six-week bootcamp class to be held during that timeframe. Both require sign up in advance.

The Biggest Loser contest is free and open to all base ID cardholders 18 and above. The goal is to lose inches as well as weight, and there will be mini events for competitors during the 12-week period to keep motivated.

"By the end of the 12 weeks, those doing the Biggest Loser contest should see a definite improvement in all levels of fitness, providing they've been doing everything they should be," said Deborah Collins, 100th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports specialist.

The bootcamp course is run by one of the fitness center's personal trainers and costs $200.

"I advise everyone to get a MicroFit assessment done, because even if you're in good shape, you could find out you actually have a health problem such as high blood pressure," said Collins. "Making lifestyle changes and incorporating a great exercise and nutrition program can help control some disease states like elevated blood-pressure, cholesterol and diabetes without the use of medicine, or it can help limit the amount of medicine needed.

"People say it gives them a wake-up call and the motivation needed to get started and on the road to getting healthier," she added.
