Base library to host 'Bloody 100th' heritage lecture Dec. 5

RAF MILDENHALL, England -- A 100th Bomb Group heritage lecture is scheduled for Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. at the base library.

Mark Howell, 100th Air Refueling Wing historian, will lecture on the history of the 100th BG during World War II.

Howell will also cite anecdotes from 100th BG pilots who flew B-17 missions and anecdotes from German fighter pilots who flew against the B-17s.

The 100th ARW is a diverse organization and its primary mission is air refueling and combat support operations throughout the European and African areas of responsibility.

The 100th ARW history can be traced back to the 100th BG. The British military started planning a Royal Air Force bomber base at Mildenhall in the late 1920s, and purchased the land in 1929.

RAF Mildenhall opened three years later Oct. 16, 1934, as one of the RAF's largest bomber stations.
