The winter holiday period (Thanksgiving to the New Year) is a wonderful time. Usually, people spend quality time with loved ones, celebrate traditions and enjoy each other.

However, it can also be a difficult time for many, because of stress, financial pressures (increased by gift giving and travel), disappointments, loss of a loved one or being away from home.

For those who find themselves fighting the blues or getting giddy during the holidays, here are some suggestions on surviving and thriving during this important time of the year:

If you're spending the holidays away from family, choose to make the most of it. One idea is to plan a trip. During this time, take a trip to some exciting places either in the U.K. or in Europe. The trip doesn't have to be extensive - day trips work well.

Another activity includes doing charity work. Helping others will make the season all the more meaningful, both for you and your family.

Don't forget to call home, and make sure you call when you can have a quality conversation. Celebrate family traditions even if away - watch traditional movies, decorate or include a special food item.

Lastly, find a new family! This works for singles and families. Make plans to spend key holidays with others. The experiences and memories will be all the better when spent together.
If the holiday season is particularly difficult for you, then I suggest you prepare for it by accepting the fact and reminding yourself it is a season, so it will soon pass. Get out and socialize - it will make the season better.

Remember to exercise. Eating healthy is relative during the holidays, but to whatever extent you can, the better you eat, the better you'll feel.

Know your boundaries and communicate them when necessary. This will be very helpful in successfully getting through the holidays positively. Sometimes talking to someone helps too. If you would like to talk, call the chapel at DSN 238-2822 or 01638-542822.

Chaplains are good listeners! I hope you have a wonderful and meaningful holiday season!
