As a reminder of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the 100th Air Refueling Wing Information Assurance office would like to share 2011's Top 10 Cyber Do's and Don'ts.

DON'T
  1. Navigate to unauthorized or inappropriate websites. If the website doesn't begin with "https://", it's not secure.
  2. Connect personally owned devices to government systems. This introduces the potential of viruses and data spillage.
  3. Click on unverified e-mail links. Always double check addresses prior to entering personal information.
  4. Introduce music CD's or DVD's to government information systems. Some contain root kits which could endanger the network.
  5. Send classified information over unclassified systems.
  6. Take wireless devices (cell phones, digital readers, etc) into classified processing areas.
  7. Use wireless devices on DOD systems. Currently, no wireless mouse meets National Security Agency regulations.
  8. Write down passwords to websites or systems.
  9. Circumvent the rules, they are there to protect the people and systems.
  10. Plug USB flash memory drives into government systems.

DO
  1. Protect Personally Identifiable Information and Privacy Act information.
  2. Recognize attempted phishing attacks and report them to your information assurance officer.
  3. Use firewall protection at home.
  4. Install antivirus for home. This is available from your IAO.
  5. Install security patches on your government and home system.
  6. Recognize classified information and process it only on approved systems.
  7. Complete annual information assurance training ahead of time.
  8. Use digital signatures and encryption when necessary.
  9. Be over zealous protecting our network. If it appears suspicious, it very well could be.
  10.  Remove your ID when you step away from direct continuous view of your computer system.

Following these simple rules when needed, as well as know your unit IAO for when you have questions.
