Base recycling center supports local school Published Oct. 24, 2011 By Tech. Sgt. Neal Joiner 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs RAF MILDENHALL, England -- For some, the environment is not a priority. Others make a personal effort to ensure our planet is still around for future generations. A teacher at Beck Row Primary School is one of the latter. Angie Hamilton, head teacher at Beck Row Primary School, has requested 1,500 two-liter bottles from RAF Mildenhall to use in building a green house at the school. The greenhouse not only creates an affordable alternative to an expensive commercially produced greenhouse but also teaches the students at the primary school about recycling and environmental responsibility. The bottles will be used to create the walls and roof of the green house instead of glass or pre made plastic. The recycling center at the base is collecting the bottles by sorting through their scheduled pickups and from a special bin set up at the center. The center provides them to the school as they receive them. They have accumulated approximately 200 bottles since beginning the collection effort last month. Rory Palmer, the recycling center manager, is heading up the base effort to obtain the bottles, and anticipates collecting enough bottles for the greenhouse by spring 2012. Although the bin at the center has been set up, most of the bottles obtained have come through the normal recycling pickups from around the base. For individuals or organizations interested in assisting with maintaining a special bin for collection of the plastic bottles at an alternate location on base please contact Palmer at DSN 238- 5551.
