RAF Mildenhall proves ability to survive, operate Published Oct. 7, 2011 By Tech. Sgt. Kevin Wallace 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs RAF MILDENHALL, England -- More than 100 Airmen participated in an operational readiness exercise here Oct. 3 to 5. Phase II kicked off Oct. 5 with an inbound in-flight emergency at an exercise deployed location. The landing gear collapsed on touchdown, and firefighters responded. The firefighters also had to remove simulated casualties from the crashed plane. Later in the day, the deployed base was attacked with mortars and missiles carrying chemical weapons. Airmen had to don chemical protective suits and masks, and shelter. Once alarm conditions were downgraded, they searched for unexploded ordnance and signs of chemical agents. Base leadership also participated in a command and control capacity. The exercise evaluators were impressed with the exercise. With another training opportunity under their belt, RAF Mildenhall Airmen are better prepared for real-world engagements. Reporting from RAF Mildenhall, I'm Tech. Sgt. Kevin Wallace.
