Giving blood to save lives

RAF MILDENHALL, England --  The Armed Services Blood Program will be holding a blood drive here Sept. 13 at the North Side Fitness Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The ASBP plays a key role in providing quality blood products for Service members and their families during both peace and in war time. As a joint operation among Army, Navy and Air Force, the ASBP has many components working together to collect, process, store, distribute and transfuse blood worldwide.

"It is important to donate blood because Service members who may pass through Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or other European hospitals from deployed locations, can receive life saving treatments due to our donations," said Staff Sgt. John Esposito, 100th Comptroller Squadron blood drive representative. "Another reason may be that someone in our local military community might need that donation in a life-threatening situation."

Blood and blood products are used for patients of all ages for many reasons. Donations can give sick or injured troops and their families a second chance at life.

One donation could save a Service member injured in action, a child with cancer, or a family member in need of a heart transplant.

"The ASBP needs about 400 units per month to do its mission," said Esposito.

Anyone, military or family member, can donate blood.

"Walk-ins are always welcome," said Esposito.
