July 27, 1953: After more than three years of war, an armistice was signed at Panmunjom, Korea.  This armistice restored the border between the Koreas near the 38th Parallel and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a 2.5-mile wide buffer zone between the two Koreas.
