Military Saves Week, Feb. 22 through 25, is designed to encourage financial maturity and growth within the military community.

"It's a great opportunity for people to relook at their financial goals, whether they are short, medium or long term," Jennifer Johnson, Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant.

During Military Saves Week, several base agencies will be offering a variety of financial events across base, including information tables, vehicle-buying tips, retirement planning and basic money management. For a comprehensive list of events, click here.

"Many times people forget about the financial aspects of having a baby, getting married, preparing for retirement or joining the military," Ms. Johnson said.

Individuals can also take the Saver's Pledge, which is a pledge to themselves to save and encourage others to save too. Individual participation will not be reported to anyone, but participants will receive a monthly electronic newsletter that contains information about saving. A name will be drawn from RAF Mildenhall pledges to win a golf- or coffee-themed gift basket worth $50.

Financial stability is about a lot more than knowledge -- it takes consistent action over time, according to the military saves website. Most of us do better when we have a supportive environment.

The goal of the program is to eventually change the military culture and create a saving community where people will encourage others to save money regularly and discourage each other from excessive spending.
