During the winter months, local roads are known for being hazardous, and motorists are reminded to keep that in mind when traveling.

To help drivers plan accordingly, RAF Mildenhall announces current road conditions through automated hotlines, recalls and web posts.

The process starts with the 100th Security Forces Squadron.

During times of severe weather, 100th SFS patrols drive around base to assess the road conditions.

"Patrols look for severity of ice and snow patches, black ice and slick surfaces that could be dangerous for our base population," said Senior Airman Michael Bradley, 100th SFS.

Security Forces classify the roads as one of three road conditions: green, yellow or red.

Road condition green refers to no indications of weather hazards that might affect the commute to and from work.

A road condition of yellow means weather conditions warrant the use of caution during the commute.

The road condition will be red when weather has caused driving conditions and roads to be either extremely hazardous or impassable.

When road conditions are yellow or red, base members should pre-coordinate with supervision to determine delayed or possible no reporting until road conditions change.

After the 100th SFS determines the road condition, they make a recommendation to Col. David Doe, 100th Mission Support Group commander, who will make the final decision to change the official road condition and determine late or no reporting.

Once a road condition has been declared, the 100th Air Refueling Wing Command Post ensures that the base populace is informed.

"When we receive the updated road condition, we send out a base-wide e-mail, update the automated system that notifies the commanders and the road condition hotline." said Airman 1st Class Garrett Lee, 100th ARW Command Post. "We also contact public affairs so they can update the base website."

Keeping the road condition up-to-date helps ensure the safety of the personnel stationed at RAF Mildenhall.

"It is vital that all personnel and their dependents have timely information on the status of roads," said Colonel Doe. "They need this information before they get in their vehicles and decide to drive."

Current road condition information can be found at www.mildenhall.af.mil, and on the road condition hotline, DSN 238-3541 or 01638 543540.
