Dog doc is in: National Veterinary Technician Week runs through Oct. 16

RAF MILDENHALL, England --  Pets are important members of many families, yet they sometimes don't receive the care they deserve. As members of the veterinary healthcare team, veterinary technicians at the RAF Feltwell Veterinary Clinic are educated in the latest medical advances and skilled at working alongside veterinarians to give military working dogs and military pets the best medical care possible.

As a demonstration of their appreciation, the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America has proclaimed Oct. 10 to 16 to be National Veterinary Technician Week. This annual event recognizes veterinary technicians for their contributions in pet healthcare, as well as veterinarians, assistants, practice managers and others involved in this care.

Veterinary technicians work closely with veterinarians, veterinary assistants, practice managers, patients and owners to link everyone involved in the care process. One responsibility is to help educate pet owners and facilitate proper care of the pet and encourage a full recovery. Oftentimes, this can require veterinary technicians to roll up their sleeves and aid members of the veterinary healthcare team with examinations, treatments and procedures. This year's week-long celebration of their effort has been aptly themed "Hands-on Healing."

NAVTA is a nonprofit organization that represents and promotes the veterinary technician profession. By providing direction, education, support and coordination for its members, NAVTA remains devoted to developing and enhancing the profession of veterinary technology.
