It's that time of year when school is in session, and everyone has settled into their routines and habits.

It is also the time of year when many people take advantage of the enormous number of venues here in Europe to experience the local culture and socialize -- festivals, sporting events, clubs, and churches are just a few examples. Unfortunately, these public gatherings also provide opportunities to those who want to do harm to Americans.

The threat is real. Current information suggests that Al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in multiple regions, including Europe. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics including suicide operations, assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, and bombings. The key to disrupting their activities is to stay alert and to speak up when something seems out of the ordinary.

Each and every member of USAFE is reminded to be the eyes and ears -- a security sensor -- in their local neighborhoods. If something is out of place or makes you feel uncomfortable, be vigilant and report anything unusual to your local law enforcement or security forces personnel.

The attached handout provides information on steps you can take to keep communities safe. Be aware, make smart decisions about your personal safety, and speak up when something seems wrong. Working together is the best way to keep our communities safe.
