The 100th Air Refueling Wing's annual Critical Days of Summer awareness campaign is in full swing.

From about Memorial Day to Labor Day, numbers of fatal accidents usually increase, said Master Sgt. William Rathbun, 100th ARW Safety Office superintendent.

"It's summer, people are going out more, spending more time participating in sports and recreational activities," he said.

Several events are scheduled to highlight safety and risk awareness during the campaign, which officially runs from May 28 to Sept. 7 this year.

The 100th ARW's campaign, which officially runs from May 28 to Sept. 7 this year, will focus on a different aspect of risk management each week throughout the Critical Days of Summer. Topics like sports, fatigue, bike and pedestrian safety, traffic and firework safety, alcohol awareness and heat injuries and back to school safety will be highlighted.

Sergeant Rathbun said the best way to prevent unnecessary accidents can be summed up with one word: think.

"People must think before they act," he said. "A lot of times, they just don't think a whole process through from start to finish, and that's how accidents happen."
