Latest information regarding volcanic ash Published April 15, 2010 RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Due to ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland moving into U.K. airspace, all flights into and out of RAFs Lakenheath and Mildenhall and civilian U.K. airports have been cancelled until at least 1 a.m. Saturday. The National Air Traffic Services will re-assess the situation at 2:30 p.m. today to determine whether they can re-open the airspace early Saturday. The NATS website advises travelers that the situation continues to be dynamic and subject to change. Experts have warned that the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud would be sufficient to jam aircraft engines. Those planning leave/on leave who are traveling by air should contact their airline regarding flights over the next 24 to 48 hours. Health officials say the ash does not pose a significant risk to public health because of its high altitude. However, those who have a pre-existing respiratory condition (such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma) and notice changes in their health should contact their primary care manager at the 48th Medical Group.
