Employees from the Health and Wellness Centers at RAFs Mildenhall and Lakenheath are encouraging families to take a step forward in improving their health by signing up for the Step into Spring walking challenge from April 12 through 30.

"We really want to encourage people to do things to improve their health," said Master Sgt. Debra Downing, flight chief for both HAWCs. "With this being the Year of the Air Force Family, if they can get out and do these things, even better."

All ages may participate in the event that runs through the month of May, and the first 100 people to sign up will receive a free pedometer to help track their progress. For those without a pedometer, there are other options to count steps.

"Every person will receive a brochure that gives step equivalents," said the master sergeant. "For example, 10 minutes of walking is roughly equivalent to 1,200 steps for the average person."

Walking is not the only physical exercise that qualifies for the program. Participants may substitute cycling, swimming, weight lifting and roller skating for steps. One minute of cycling or swimming qualifies for 150 steps, one minute of weight lifting earns 100 steps and one minute of roller skating equates to 200 steps.

"We also have lots of prizes to be given out," said Sergeant Downey. "People can earn the prizes at various intervals throughout the weeks."
