Dormitory 210 scheduled for renovations Published March 22, 2010 By Tony Rawson 100th Civil Engineer Squadron RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Dormitory 210 at RAF Mildenhall will be undergoing a 20th Anniversary makeover. Built in 1990, the facility has a footprint of 49,257 square feet -- the second largest dorm on base. With a replacement value of $14.1 million, it was originally designed to house 248 Airmen in a two-person-per-room layout (or 2+2). The building has been home to a number of squadrons through the years and currently provides Unaccompanied Housing facilities for 124 members of the 100th Cilvil Engineer and Logistics Readiness squadrons. This project along with the recent repair of Dorm 224 began the initial stage of the RAF Mildenhall Bridge Plan initiative that is designed to improve UH facilities for our Airmen during the next decade. During the course of the D210 project, both dormitories 212 and 213 will be demolished as part of this foot print reduction strategy. The intent of this project is primarily to improve the living space for Team Mildenhall Airmen. Dormitory quality of life is high on the Air Force priority list, and in line with this philosophy and current movement towards space optimization it was decided to re-invigorate D210's living space. The basic overall scope requires a re-configuration of the 62 existing bathroom areas, dividing them in two. That will provide an additional 62 private bathrooms with showers, toilets and recessed vanity fittings, and maximizing livable space. With ceramic tiling throughout, improved storage and an enhanced lighting scheme, a fresh hygienic bathroom look will be created. See the accompanying graphic. Moving the double closets into the living space (originally sized for two airmen) allows a kitchenette to be formed in its place and removes the sometimes noisy kitchen appliance from the sleeping quarters. Adjacent the new bathroom will be a partitioned kitchenette space allowing for a fridge and freezer and a kitchen cabinet with countertop, ideal for a microwave and storage of food items. Additional shelving and ceramic tile allows for food preparation and storage seperate from the actual living area. New finishes including carpet, blinds, fans and lighting should provide a more homely feel for the occupants. Airmen we have spoken to, value private, comfortable and homely living quarters and we hope that this project will provide this out of a 20 year old building. This construction project has been funded for $4.7 million and we anticipate a start date of May 2010. In preparation for this project, 100th CES Airmen will be moving to Dorm 108 and 100th LRS Airmen will be moving to the recently repaired Dorm 224 just across the street. The new residents of the facility will be 352nd Special Operations Group Airmen, and they are slated to move in summer 2011.
