Team Mildenhall steadily approaching 2009 AFAF goal halfway through campaign

RAF MILDENHALL, England --  Team Mildenhall is a little more than halfway toward its goal of raising its $71,723 for the 2009 Air Force Assistance Fund campaign.

Roughly 70 percent of RAF Mildenhall's almost 3,700 people have been contacted by their unit's AFAF representative, and $39,621 has already been given to the fund. However, some units are collecting money to give at one time in a lump sum, said 1st Lt. Michael Mathews, RAF Mildenhall primary base AFAF representative, so the current total may be more.

"We're doing pretty well," Lieutenant Mathews said. "We're only halfway through the campaign and have raised more than half our goal, and not all the money's been counted."

The local chapter of the Air Force Sergeant's Association hosted a bowl-a-thon recently, raising $1,000 toward RAF Mildenhall's contribution. Another bowl-a-thon, hosted by the RAF Mildenhall First Sergeant's Council, is scheduled April 17 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the base bowling center. Those interested in participating should contact their first sergeant for details.

The Air Force-wide campaign, which ends May 1, raises money for charities which benefit Airmen and their families. According to Senior Master Sgt. John Host, RAF Mildenhall alternate base AFAF representative, the campaign gave nearly $14 million in emergency assistance to Airmen and their families in 2008.


He said in addition to emergency aid, the fund provided $8 million in education benefits and more than $2.5 million in community enhancement projects, and the RAF Mildenhall community "certainly benefited from it."

"Some of the money members of Team Mildenhall put into the campaign will make its way back here," Sergeant Host said. "We will see the benefit of this program in our own community."

There are several ways a person can contribute to AFAF, including one-time cash payments and monthly payroll deductions.
