Operation Warm Heart rings in the holidays at RAF Mildenhall Published Dec. 1, 2008 By Geoff Janes 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs RAF MILDENHALL, England -- With the holiday season firmly in swing, some younger families may be feeling the pinch. But the RAF Mildenhall First Sergeant Council is helping spread the cheer by sponsoring Operation Warm Heart, a program used to raise money to help those junior enlisted families offset some of the holiday expense. The program, which was able to raise more than $14,000, last year, kicked off Friday. It is being held Saturday in the BXtra near the Christmas tree in the food court from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. During that time, volunteers will be ringing a bell and manning a table in two-hour shifts to accept donations. "We will also be running the table every weekend until Dec. 21," Master Sgt. Beau Jones, 100th Force Support Squadron first sergeant, said. "We canvassed all the squadrons (at RAF Mildenhall), and talked to leaders to find out which families would benefit the most from the program." The collected money will be distributed continuously by the council throughout the year to help out Team Mildenhall families. "The money can be used to help families who don't qualify for Air Force Aid," he said. "But, the bulk of it is distributed in $50 DECA (Defense Commissary Agency) gift certificates at Thanksgiving and Christmas." Those wanting to donate to the fund can do so with cash, a check or pounds. "Any donation people can make during these times is greatly appreciated," Sergeant Jones said. "The good thing is that it comes directly back into our community." Editor's note: For more information, or to volunteer for a two-hour shift at the Operation Warm Heart table, contact Master Sgt.
