As part of a winter driving campaign, Ministry of Defence Police and Guard Service personnel, along with members from the 100th Security Forces Squadron, 100th Air Refueling Wing Safety Office, 48th Security Forces Squadron and 48th Fighter Wing Safety Office, will be conducting winter safety checks of vehicles Nov. 13 and 14.

Vehicle checks, including tire checks, will be carried out on the approach road from Gate 15 to the 100th SFS Control Room Nov. 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. at RAF Mildenhall, and in the BX parking lot near the hospital at RAF Lakenheath, Nov. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Along with the checks, advice will be given if any defects are found, and leaflets will be handed out.

To aid base members and their families having to drive in winter, the MoD Police offers the following tips:

· Have your vehicle serviced regularly, so it won't let you down even if the weather does.

· Keep the cold out of your vehicle by checking and replacing the antifreeze in your radiator.

· Make sure your battery is fully charged, and replace it if necessary.

· Keep lights clean and check the bulbs regularly.

· Ensure tires are properly inflated to manufacturers recommended pressure, and have 3 millimeters of tread depth.

· Make sure your windows and mirrors are clean, and free from ice and snow. Windows must be clear and demisted before you set off.

· Make sure you have a map (or satellite navigation system) with you for unplanned diversions.
