Greg's Golden Goal seals championship win for 100th FSS

RAF Mildenhall, England -- Greg Posada scored in the last minute of extra time to win the outdoor soccer championships for the 100th Force Support Squadron against the 95th Reconnaissance Squadron at the Hardstand Sports field, Sept. 26.

Number one seeds 100th FSS, started the game brightly with the front pair Greg Posada and Carlos Rojas always looking to shoot on goal. But it was the 95th RS, who took the lead at seven minutes when Jarred Flores slotted the ball home. The 95th RS were only able to hold onto their lead for a minute when Scott Reed showed some good close control and squeezed the ball home from a tight angle to tie the game at 1-1.

FSS should have taken the lead at 13 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Jarred Flores handled the ball in the box. Greg Posada's spot kick was saved by Marty Boyd in goal for the 95th RS. But Greg Posada made amends for his early miss when he received a pass from Richard Oot and found the bottom corner of the net to give 100th FSS a 2-1 half-time lead.

The 95th RS's, journey to the championship game was not an easy one, losing games early in the tournament, but the sixth seeds showed why they made it. The second half was less than a minute old, when a stunning long range shot from the ever-dangerous Steve Alverson, flew in the top corner and gave the goalkeeper no chance.

Both teams pressed hard to seal a victory in the remaining minutes of the half, but through good defense and tired legs the game went into extra time.

So an extra five minutes had to be played. In extra time the Golden Goal rule applied, meaning the first team to score wins. In the last minute of the five, Nigel Slevin saved a certain goal for the 100th FSS by heading the ball onto the bar, the ball came off the bar and another shot on target produced a great save from Kathleen Pohl who turned the ball around the post for a corner. So, extra time failed to see any side score, and another five minutes had to be played.

With the minutes ticking away the game looked like it was heading for penalty shoot-out. Then, with eight seconds remaining, Greg Posada scored the winner and was immediately surrounded by his joyous teammates.

Greg Posada said, "Golden Goal is always a good game. We got very lucky at the end, and we were able to take it home. Overall we played well and to finish as the top seed you can't ask for more than that."
