Mildenhall's Intramural softball season opened July 8 on the recently completed sports field near the Hardstand Gym.

The honorary first pitch, thrown by Lt. Col. Rich Wagner, 100th Force Support Squadron commander, was the first on Mildenhall for nearly two years since the demolition of Ford Park.

The new field is multi-use, catering to softball, soccer and flag football. It boasts professional style dugouts, barbecue facilities and fresh turf. Eventually, there will be two fields, and future improvements include overhead lighting, additional fencing and a playground.

Intramural sports take precedence on the fields during their normal seasons, however if the fields are not being used, anyone can use them, according to Master Sgt. Paul McCourty, 100th FSS fitness and sports director. Weekdays are typically reserved, but weekends are not.

"A few squadrons have had their sports days here, and not a single complaint," he said. "In the end, I think it will be much better than Ford Park."
