As the Earth continues its journey around the sun, the North Pole moves away from the fiery hot center of our solar system. Thus the sun remains lower in the sky throughout the day and the days continue to get shorter - we know this as winter.

Because the United Kingdom is further north than the United States, the seasons are more pronounced. Therefore, daytime hours will scientifically be less here.

During this time, base personnel are reminded to heed the reflective belt policy signed by the installation commander. It reads, "During the hours of darkness, or during periods of reduced visibility, all military personnel assigned to RAF Mildenhall will wear reflective belts or vests when outdoors while in uniform or exercising."
