RAF MILDENHALL, U.K. -- The core mission of the 100th Air Refueling Wing is to "Fuel the Fight, Fight the Base," a commitment demanding precision and professionalism from every Airman. Last April, that same standard of excellence was called upon not for a real-world mission, but for a Hollywood film set, where Team Mildenhall Airmen served as key advisors and extras in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War.
This unique collaboration provided a global audience with a glimpse into one of the most sacred honors in the U.S. military. The Airmen's involvement was crucial for a powerful scene depicting a solemn ceremony for a fallen service member.
Andrew Bernstein, the film’s director, emphasized the importance of this real-world partnership. "The more real military and CIA personnel we can include, the more authenticity it adds," he said. "We really try to honor the service of these people... Being at Mildenhall lets us see the aircraft, the people—it makes everything more believable, bigger, and more exciting. We take that very seriously."
In honor of the Airmen who supported the film, Amazon MGM Studios offered an advanced screening of the film in the RAF Mildenhall Galaxy Club on May 18th -- a welcome treat hosted by the 100th Force Support Squadron for the hardworking members of Team Mildenhall.
Col. Steven Byrum, 100th Air Refueling Wing commander, expressed his pride in the Airmen who participated, noting how the project reflects the wing's foundational values and nonstop dedication. "Our Airmen have been working hard, and this screening was a well-deserved treat for them. Whether they are executing our 'Fuel the Fight' mission over Europe or demonstrating the solemn honor of our traditions on a film set, these Airmen operate with unparalleled professionalism," said Byrum. "This was an opportunity to display the hard work and character of the individuals who ensure this base is a hardened, resilient platform, ready for any call."
The ramp ceremony is a silent, solemn ceremony where the remains of a fallen service member are transferred from an aircraft to a transport vehicle. For the Airmen on set, translating the gravity of this real-world ritual for the screen was a profound responsibility.
The collaboration highlights the trust placed in U.S. Air Force Airmen to represent the service's core values. As the film reaches audiences, the professionalism of Team Mildenhall Airmen shines, offering a poignant reminder of the honor and dedication inherent in their promise to "Fuel the Fight, Fight the Base."
