RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany -- On July 4, 2026, the United States celebrates a historic milestone: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of a nation founded on the ideals of liberty, self-governance and freedom.
While the Declaration of Independence marked the thirteen colonies’ intention to separate from Great Britain, the path to nationhood was anything but certain. For seven years, American forces endured hardship, setbacks, and sacrifice as they fought for the opportunity to transform those ideals into reality. Ultimately, perseverance, determination and the support of trusted allies proved decisive.
One of the most significant turning points came after the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. Recognizing the potential of the emerging nation, France joined the conflict and provided critical military support. French troops, weapons, supplies, and naval power helped tip the balance in favor of the American cause. That partnership reached its defining moment during the Yorktown Campaign in 1781, when French naval forces defeated the British fleet at the Battle of the Chesapeake, preventing reinforcements from reaching British General Lord Cornwallis and setting the conditions for American victory.
The Alliance forged between the United States and France during the Revolutionary War established a legacy of cooperation that continues to shape international partnerships today. More than a century later, when American forces arrived in France during World War I, Col. Charles Stanton famously declared, “Lafayette, nous sommes ici” — “Lafayette, we are here” — symbolizing America's commitment to standing alongside its allies in times of need.

Whether integrating with NATO Allies during exercises such as Ramstein Flag, strengthening interoperability through African Lion, supporting humanitarian assistance operations, or advancing airpower cooperation through engagements with African partner nations, Airmen continue to demonstrate that security is strongest when nations work together.
The strategic environment facing the United States and its Allies has evolved significantly since 1776, but one principle remains unchanged: enduring partnerships are a force multiplier. The same spirit of cooperation that helped secure American independence continues to underpin modern alliances, ensuring that nations committed to freedom and sovereignty are prepared to meet today's challenges together.
