The U.S. Air Force approved the use of various commercial mobile devices. The two commonly used devices at RAF Mildenhall are BlackBerrys and iPhones. However as users change and service contracts expire, users are being migrated to one device - the iPhone.

New devices come with new technology which, in turn, presents new challenges for both the 100th Communication Squadron and the Airmen assigned here.

As the U.S. Air Force transitions to the iPhone, it's also currently developing new technical solutions which, when paired with the iPhone, will maximize the operational capabilities of the device.

So, how do Airmen get an iPhone?

First, organizations must obtain authorization from their unit commander and then purchase the phone.

If approved, the unit Information Assurance Officer will need to submit a web enabled requirements management systems request. Upon approval by the 100th CS, the IAO has a series of steps to complete for licensing, registering and adding the device to the military network. Once that is complete, users will receive a pin and a welcome e-mail.

The final step is to contact the Wing Information Assurance Office to schedule an appointment to have Softcert encryption capabilities loaded on the phone.

Familiarity of the technology and understanding the procurement process will enable organizations to a higher success rate with this transition.
