Although British weather isn't known for being warm and sunny all year round, this time of year does bring hotter temperatures. This makes the summer season even more exciting when it comes around.

The longer days and warmer weather allows Airmen and their families to participate in many outdoor activities. Even with all the fun distractions, safety should remain a top priority.

"With the sun out longer, people tend to do more throughout the day," said Staff Sgt. Jose Martinez, 100th Air Refueling Wing occupational safety professional from San Francisco, California. "Therefore, the potential for a mishap is increased depending on the activity. This is the time of year where the Air Force as a whole sees a rise in mishap rates."

When participating in sports or activities make sure to use proper protective equipment, use sunscreen if outdoors and stay hydrated. Dehydration may occur quickly while out in the heat, especially while participating in a sport. Always have a wingman, avoid alcohol-related incidents and never drink and drive.

In the summer months, driving is still the biggest risk, added Martinez. In 2014, the Air Force suffered the loss of 17 Airmen throughout the summer. Most of these fatalities were vehicle accidents.

Whether driving a car or riding a motorcycle, many people take road trips during the summer. When preparing for a road trip, ensure vehicles are up for the trip and in proper working condition. Remember some of these safety tips:

· Don't text or talk on your cell phone or program your GPS while driving. Stop, or have a passenger complete the task for you.
· Avoid driving while fatigued.
· Schedule frequent breaks and have a sit-down meal versus driving while eating.
· Don't drink and drive.
· Always wear a seat belt.

"Enjoy your summer and have fun, but always remember to look safe, play safe and, most importantly, stay safe," said Martinez.
