Who would have thought that there would be a dedicated night to celebrate the death of a man who is regarded as one of Britain's most villainous traitors.

That is exactly what Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, is.

Guy Fawkes was the only man arrested when the 'Gunpowder Plot', an attempt to blow up parliament, failed Nov. 5, 1604. If the plot had been successful, it would have killed King James I. After the capture of Fawkes, citizens began lighting fires in celebration of parliament and the king being safeguarded.

Now on or around November 5, in towns and villages all across England, people light fireworks and burn effigies of Guy Fawkes to celebrate the foiled plot.

Americans stationed here have the opportunity to join locals in celebrating a day that they may not know about.

Various local communities and organizations are planning to host events. To find an event visit http://www.suffolktouristguide.com/Suffolk-Fireworks-Displays-for-Bonfire-Night.asp.

Although it's important to have fun during Guy Fawkes Night, remember to follow all the safety guidelines, especially when attending events which involve bonfires or fireworks.

For any Team Mildenhall member planning to host their own event with firework, be sure to visit https://www.gov.uk/fireworks-the-law to learn about UK laws before celebrating.
