A pinewood derby car receives additional weight before the Mayflower Pinewood Derby March 8, 2014, on RAF Mildenhall, England. Cub Scouts made the cars and Scoutmasters added lead weights prior to starting the event to ensure each car weighed close to, but not more than, 5 ounces. Checking each car’s weight ensures no Cub has an unfair advantage in the competition, which focuses on design and construction as well as speed.
