Decorating homes and work-centers is a long-standing tradition during the holiday season. Unfortunately, these same decorations may increase the chance of fire.

Following a few simple fire safety tips can keep lights, candles and Christmas trees from causing a tragedy.

Christmas Trees:
· If it's a live tree, choose one with fresh, green needles that don't fall off when touched.
· Cut at least 2 inches off the trunk to expose fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help prevent the tree drying out and becoming a fire hazard. Keep the tree watered daily.
· Make sure the tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source.
· If purchasing an artificial tree, look for a "Fire Resistant" label.
· Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it's dry. Dried-out trees are fire hazards as they become more flammable.

Lights:
· Before using lights outdoors, ensure they're certified for outdoor use. Never use nails or tacks to mount lights outdoors; instead, use plastic holders designed for mounting.
· Check all tree lights; make sure the bulbs work and there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections.
· Always turn off holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house.
· Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.

Space Heaters:
· Plug portable heaters directly into a wall outlet; don't use extension cords or power strips.
· Keep 36 inches clearance between portable heaters and any combustible material.
· Ensure all space heaters automatically turn off when tipped over.
· All space heaters should be approved by Underwriters Laboratory listings or host-nation equivalent.

According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, each year approximately 12,500 people are treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to holiday decoration mishaps. Don't let it be you.
