The education office offers college courses on base from the University of Maryland University College in the comfort of Airmen' s own squadrons.

The classes are a way for shift workers and people who work on the flightline to get their education without having to leave their duty sections.

The program helps Airmen who work 24-hour shifts, like firefighters, go to classes which would otherwise be scheduled when they are unavailable, said Latriesse Phillips, 100th Force Support Squadron UMUC field representative.

"The classes that are available are the regular onsite classes that take place at the education office," Phillips said. "The only difference in the course is that instead of the student having to go to the teacher to learn, the teacher goes to them."

The courses are varied to include humanities, science, math and English.

"The classes make it easier for Airmen who are taking lunchtime classes, because instead of having to be gone for two hours because of the commute to and from the education center, they only have to be gone an hour and a half, and they don't have to leave their building," said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Danyal Metz, 100th Maintenance Group/Maintenance Operations Flight, crew chief maintenance training instructor.

The only thing students need to do to sign up is give the squadron point of contact their registration form. Everything, besides tuition assistance and buying textbooks, is done for them.

"It's a great program; the class sizes are exactly the same and they are open to everyone, with priority given to the active duty members of the squadron," Metz said.
The program is open to every squadron on base.
