The Department of Defense is reducing civilian furlough days, which started July 8, 2013, from 11 days or 88 work hours to six days or 48 work hours.

The furlough, announced May 14, 2013, was created as a way to close the budgetary gap in Fiscal 2013.

If all employees started their furlough days the week of July 8, 2013, by the week of Aug. 17, 2013, they should have completed their six-day furlough requirement. However, all civilian employees need to complete their furlough days in a timely manner before the end of this fiscal year.

All furlough days for Department of Defense Department Schools have been canceled. Newly hired civilian employees must complete an equivalent of two furlough days per pay period until Aug. 17, 2013.
