Saying 'YES!' to my future: Teen program allows for professional growth Published Aug. 8, 2013 By Rebecca Grillo 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs intern RAF MILDENHALL, England -- What can the word "yes" do for you? For me, "YES!" is getting me ready for college. I'm only 14 and I know I don't want to be up to my eyeballs in college debt. With the Youth Employment Services program, I am earning money without help from my parents. The YES program can help teens earn money for college - which is always good. In this program, teens can learn different traits or skills that will prepare them for education and in their future careers. If you've ever asked yourself, "How can I help pay for college without working three jobs?" then YES is the answer. This program gives you job experience without being 21. Being involved in this program also teaches responsibility. I'm a public affairs intern; I have learned that being on time and socializing with people I work with is important as well as professionally interacting with the people I interact with when I am out taking photos. I have also learned different techniques for photography. The YES program has given me the opportunity to develop skills I know I will need when I leave high school and move on to college. Money is a lot of people's concern. Is it yours? With YES, it doesn't have to be. You can earn up to $1000 while in high school to apply to college expenses. I would like to help pay for my tuition. Yes, my mom has put away money but I want to be able to contribute. This program also teaches you the difference between a job and a career. Do you know the difference? The majority of people may think they're the same thing, but I have learned they're not. A job is a work area where you show up and do your eight hours, and then go home without thought of your office. A career is so much more interesting and exciting. You show up to work and socialize with your coworkers. It's also a place where you can enjoy what you do and be proud of what your job is. I think the YES program teaches teens the difference between the two, because if you have a hobby or interest in something, you have an opportunity to learn more about it. That way, you can see if you like it enough to make a career out of it. If not, you can explore more options. So, the next time someone asks you what you're doing for college, or how you are going to pay for it -- think about it. How much can YES do for you? The YES program is funded by the Air Force Aid Society and is geared toward giving youths an opportunity to provide for their futures. YES encourages all high school teens who are dependents of Active Duty Air Force personnel to enroll. YES Program students can be eligible to receive up to $1,000 towards their higher education expenses for hours spent volunteering at an on-base activity.
