10 quirky James Bond facts Published Feb. 28, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Dillon Johnston 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs RAF MILDENHALL, England -- One of the most well-known spies is James Bond. Also known as 007, the super spy is featured in 23 movies. However, there are some things even the most diehard Bond fans might not know. Here are some of the quirkiest facts in the James Bond universe. 1. James Bond's name was chosen because Ian Fleming, creator of the spy series, thought it was a very bland and boring name for a secret agent. The creator borrowed the name from an author who wrote books about birds - one such book Fleming happened to have in his library. 2. One fan theory about the James Bond series is the name "James Bond" is just a code name that is passed to each agent as the old one retires from service. This would explain how Bond can stay so young after appearing in so many films spanning five decades. 3. Q's real name is Major Geoffrey Boothroyd. Named after an actual weapons expert who advised Ian Fleming on the munitions aspects of the Bond stories, Boothroyd, or Q, was first portrayed by Peter Burton in "Dr. No". Actor Desmond Llewelyn took over the part in "From Russia with Love" and would occupy the role until his death in 1999. Llewelyn was not credited as Q until Goldfinger, bearing the name Boothroyd in the credits of "From Russia with Love". 4. Many fans do not consider the film "Never Say Never Again" a true part of the Bond canon because it was produced hastily as a part of a rights dispute over the film it is based off, "Thunderball". 5. Despite playing a gun-toting secret agent in seven bond films, Roger Moore suffers from hoplophobia, or fear of firearms. Moore's fear stems from a childhood accident when his brother accidentally shot him in the leg with an air rifle. 6. In different movies, agents 002, 003, 004, and 009 have been killed. Agent 006, believed killed, returns as the villain in "GoldenEye" before he's disposed. Besides Bond, only the unnamed 008 proves to be a skilled agent. He's mentioned several times as Bond's replacement should he die or be taken off a mission for insubordination. Agents 001 and 005 have never been mentioned. 7. Daniel Craig may be the sixth actor to play Bond, but CIA agent Felix Leiter, who appears in nine Bond movies, is played by eight different actors: Jack Lord in "Dr. No"; Cec Linder in "Goldfinger"; Rik Van Nutter in "Thunderball"; Norman Burton in "Diamonds are Forever"; David Hedison in "Live and Let Die" and "License to Kill"; Bernie Casey in "Never Say Never Again"; John Terry in "The Living Daylights"; and Jeffrey Wright in "Casino Royale". 8. Bond doesn't always drive an Aston Martin. In fact, he has driven a few unconventional vehicles over the years. He drives a Russian tank in "GoldenEye", a double decker bus in "Live and Let Die" and an oil tanker in "License to Kill". 9. President John F. Kennedy had a collection of Ian Fleming's series of books about James Bond. In an interview with Life Magazine, he listed "From Russia, With Love" as one of his favorite novels of all time. In 1961, Kennedy watched the first James Bond film, "Dr. No", in a private screening. 10. Ian Fleming wrote the first James Bond book in 1953. Daniel Craig, born in 1968, is the first actor to portray Bond who was born after the series was created.
