Before planes swap fuel in flight, fuels technicians top off tankers on ground
Staff Sgt. Nicholas Carone (left) and Senior Airman Eric Wietstruk, 100th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, inspect a fuel sample taken from a KC-135 Stratotanker Feb. 28, 2013. Cursory inspections of fuel may reveal water or debris, which could mean the gas is unsafe for flight. Carone, from Elk Grove, Calif., and Wietstruk, from Warner Robins, Ga., are deployed to southwest Europe in support of French operations in Mali. KC-135 aircrews from the 100th Air Refueling Wing, RAF Mildenhall, England, have been flying aerial refueling sorties from the deployed location since January. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt.
