Construction for runway extension underway

Contractors lay plastic blocks to build an underground soakaway as part of the taxiway extension Oct. 5, 2012 at RAF Mildenhall, England. The soakaway, which has been dug out of the ground, will take all surface water off the new taxiway and shoulders, allowing it to percolate into the ground. The water will go into gullies, built into the shoulders, via large pipes up to 300 millimeters in diameter leading into the soakaway units. These will then be covered with the dug-out chalky soil, and is then covered with a layer of top soil and grass seed. (U.S. Air Force photo by Karen Abeyasekere/Released)
