Airmen offer winter safety checks during Road Safety Week

RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Airman 1st Class Owen Gill, 100th Logistics Readiness Squadron Vehicle Maintenance, marks off items on a winter safety checklist for a vehicle which was randomly stopped and offered an inspection here Nov. 22, 2011. Airmen from vehicle maintenance and the 100th Air Refueling Wing Safety office conducted inspections in conjunction with the Ministry of Defence Police at RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath, as part of Road Safety Week. Vehicles were randomly stopped, information leaflets were handed out, and the vehicle maintenance and safety personnel used checklists to inspect items including tires, wipers and lights. Master Sgt. Dominic Cilia, 100th ARW Ground Safety manager, said they educated a lot of people on where fog lights were situated. "Many people didn't know, and most were unaware of the bad condition of their vehicle," he said. "We found several badly worn tires and wiper blades, and some vehicles with lights not working. All these are safety issues which can cause mishaps and accidents, especially in bad weather. If we can prevent even one accident by doing these checks, then we're doing our job."
