From touch-down to take-off, APG ensures tankers are mission-ready

RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Airman 1st Class Robert Calise, 100th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron APG, performs external preflight checks leading up to the takeoff of a KC-135 Stratotanker here Nov. 9, 2011. Made up of three career fields – crew chiefs, hydraulics and propulsion specialists – APG formerly meant “airplane general,” and though the name is no longer officially used, it’s still kept for its historical roots. Crew chiefs from APG launch and recover jets from RAF Mildenhall. They are responsible for the jet from touchdown to takeoff, after which the aircrew take over responsibility. Four hours prior to launching a jet, they start doing internal and external checks, ensuring the aircraft is mission-ready. (U.S. Air Force photo/Karen Abeyasekere)
